Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM)

The Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) is a leading research organization under the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change. Established in 1929, FRIM has been at the forefront of tropical forestry research, conservation, and sustainable forest management for nearly a century.

With over 600 hectares of forest reserve in Kepong, Selangor, FRIM serves as Malaysia's primary center for forestry research and development. The institute focuses on biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation, ecosystem services, and the sustainable utilization of forest resources.

FRIM's expertise spans across various disciplines including forest ecology, tree improvement, wood science, natural products, biodiversity, and environmental services. The institute plays a crucial role in supporting Malaysia's commitment to sustainable development and environmental conservation.

Jabatan Perhutanan Negeri Terengganu (JPNT) manages and safeguards forest resources in Terengganu through sustainable forest management, biodiversity protection, and responsible land-use planning.

Through collaboration with FRIM and local communities, JPNT supports ecotourism initiatives that balance conservation priorities with community livelihoods, especially in protected and high-value forest areas.

Our Mission

To conduct research and provide innovative solutions for the sustainable management and conservation of tropical forests, while empowering local communities through knowledge transfer and capacity building.

Community-Based Ecotourism (CBET)

The Community-Based Ecotourism (CBET) programme is a pioneering initiative by FRIM to promote sustainable tourism while empowering local communities. This programme integrates forest conservation with community development, creating economic opportunities for rural communities while preserving Malaysia's rich natural heritage.

CBET focuses on involving local communities in the planning, management, and operation of ecotourism activities. By doing so, it ensures that the benefits of tourism directly reach the people who are the traditional guardians of these forests, encouraging them to actively participate in conservation efforts.

Through CBET, visitors experience authentic interactions with local communities, learn about traditional forest knowledge, and contribute to the economic wellbeing of rural areas. This approach has been successfully implemented across multiple sites in Malaysia, including Dabong (Kelantan), Janda Baik (Pahang), Kuala Sat, Taman Negara (Pahang), and Gunung Tebu (Terengganu).
